Bio

Avery McShan is a full-spectrum doula dedicated to supporting families through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and loss with compassion and care. Based in Chicago, Illinois. Avery brings more than 15 years of experience as a paraprofessional working with children and families. Her extensive background in nurturing young people has given her a strong foundation in patience, empathy, and advocacy—qualities she carries into every birth space and family setting.

Avery’s journey into birth work is rooted in both her professional background and her personal story. As a mother of two living children and one angel baby, she understands the complexities of parenthood—the joy, the uncertainty, and at times, the grief. This lived experience fuels her calling to doula work and allows her to hold space for families in all their moments, whether celebratory or tender. She believes every parent deserves to be seen, heard, and supported as they navigate one of life’s most transformative experiences.

Families who work with Avery describe her as calm, grounding, and nurturing. She blends evidence-based knowledge with intuition and presence, helping families feel confident in their choices and cared for every step of the way. Whether providing physical comfort during labor, emotional reassurance in the postpartum season, or gentle support through loss, Avery shows up with nonjudgment, respect, and dedication to each family’s unique journey.

Beyond her work as a doula, Avery finds joy in spending time with family, being outdoors, and watching sports. These moments of replenishment allow her to remain present and grounded so that she can offer the best of herself to the families she serves. Avery’s approach is rooted in compassion, resilience, and a belief in the strength of every parent.

Message to new parents

Supporting families during life’s transitions is a true privilege because I know firsthand how much love, courage, and vulnerability go into these moments. My favorite part of this work is seeing parents feel more confident, supported, and cared for as they step into their own unique journey. At the end of the day, my goal is to remind every family that they are not alone and that their story matters.
