Destine Bates is a full-spectrum doula and public theologian based in Chicago, Illinois, whose practice is grounded in the reproductive justice framework developed by Loretta J. Ross. She approaches birthwork as both a sacred and social calling that honors every person’s right to bodily autonomy, safety, and self-determination within their families and communities.
A graduate of Union Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity, Destinee’s academic and vocational work bridges theology, gender studies, and sex ethics. Her studies explored how religion, race, and politics shape conversations around reproductive freedom and healing from religious trauma.
People describe Destinee as a deeply holistic and grounding presence, someone who honors the sacred journey of bringing new life into the world while equally nurturing those stepping into the profound transition of parenthood. Her care ensures that no one gets lost in the process; it is not just about welcoming a new life but about sustaining the lives of new parents so that this season feels life-giving, not depleting. Through ritual, empathy, and evidence-based support, she helps families root themselves in care, connection, and continuity.
Supporting families during this transition is a privilege because I see each birth and new beginning as a sacred unfolding. I believe every parent deserves to feel seen, held, and sustained not only as caregivers, but as whole people becoming something new themselves. My goal is to help you move through this season with gentleness, grounding, and a sense that you are never alone in the process of becoming.
