Bio

Kourtney Newberry (she/they) is a Black and Queer full-spectrum doula based in Detroit, MI and trained through Doula Trainings International (DTI). Kourtney’s practice centers evidence-based research and principles of reproductive justice, black feminism, and abolition, to ensure that all birthing people and their families are supported in their birthing experience, regardless of outcome and their background. In 2022, during undergrad, Kourtney participated in an Inside Out course with incarcerated women at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, where she was propelled into her interest in birthwork and supporting the births of incarcerated people. Kourtney would then graduate from Ohio State University in 2023 with a Bachelor's in Sociology and work as a shelter advocate and crisis specialist at an emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Kourtney’s practice and perspectives aim to uplift underrepresented birthing experiences and provide care that is trauma-informed, compassionate, empowering, and educational. Kourtney’s goal is to ensure that her clients are informed and empowered about their bodies as well as the decisions they choose to make.

In her free time, Kourtney is an avid reader, writer, vintage shopping enthusiast, and horror fan. Some of her favorite authors include Toni Morrison, bell hooks, Raven Leilani, and Melissa Febos.
