Kourtney Newberry (she/they) is a Black and Queer full-spectrum doula based in Detroit, MI and trained through Doula Trainings International (DTI). What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a professional trained to care for infants and promote postpartum recovery. Postpartum doulas offer day or night support, with a focus on mother-baby care. Their role can look different depending on the needs of the family, and include everything from caring for the infant overnight while both parents sleep, providing education on newborn care, offering breastfeeding support, and household management such as laundry, tidying, and bottle washing.

Postpartum doulas are sometimes referred to as night nurses, however, they do not provide medical care. Unlike a babysitter or nanny, they are specialists in newborn care. Postpartum doulas who practice under the title Certified Doula (CD) in the United States have gone through a rigorous certification training process, which includes in-person training, a written exam, and references from clients.

Postpartum doulas are sometimes also full-spectrum doulas, which means they provide care during labor and delivery in addition to the postpartum period.

What does a postpartum doula do?

A postpartum doula visits after the baby is born to support the new family. Their tasks might include infant care, postpartum recovery support, and household management. Typically, they will check in on both the new parents and the newborn baby, and be there to support bonding, rest, and recovery. A postpartum doula can be hired for help with baby during the day or overnight. Visits might include:

  • Infant care: Sleep peacefully or spend time with older children while an expert takes care of the newest family member
  • Newborn education: Learn infant feeding and burping techniques, cord care, and how to start a sleep schedule
  • Household help: Get help with baby laundry, bottle preparation, pump part washing, nursery organization, and light meal prep.

Postpartum doula care generally starts at $35 per hour. Commercial insurance does not typically cover doula care, but their services may be HSA/FSA eligible. Rates vary based on the doula’s level of experience, and if there are any special household considerations such as twins or awake care requirements.

Parents choose to engage a postpartum doula for different lengths of time, which also affects the total cost of doula care. Popular packages include 2-3 shifts per week for 6-12 weeks.
