Client Testimonials

“We had an amazing experience with Partum Health and Sydney, our doula. The process is efficient and flexible. She was knowledgeable, warm, patient, and paid attention to details. Highly recommend!”
—Partum Health client
“By far the best money we’ve spent parenting thus far. Second time around, we knew we’d need some overnight help so one of us could be functional (enough) to toddler parent at 6am. Karin was so helpful in the first two weeks with our second child. Without her, we would probably still have the preschool plague, and would have given it to our newborn. Luckily she was able to give us some much needed sleep so we could be the best parents for both our kids."
—Partum Health client
"Vee is soo incredibly caring to our twin boys. Using a doula a few nights a week truly saves our sanity. We can get rest and then be the best parents we can be. The nights she’s with us, I’ll come down to all the bottles washed and sanitized and organized for our next day. The best part is I’ll even hear her singing to our boys to comfort them. If you’re questioning a night doula, don’t! You will thank yourself if you get one!!!"

Postpartum doula care FAQs

The right support during the postpartum period can make all the difference. Learn more about what a postpartum doula can do for you.

What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a professional trained to care for infants and promote postpartum recovery. Postpartum doulas offer day or night support, with a focus on mother-baby care. Their role can look different depending on the needs of the family, and include everything from caring for the infant overnight while both parents sleep, providing education on newborn care, offering breastfeeding support, and household management such as laundry, tidying, and bottle washing.

Postpartum doulas are sometimes referred to as night nurses, however, they do not provide medical care. Unlike a babysitter or nanny, they are specialists in newborn care. Postpartum doulas who practice under the title Certified Doula (CD) in the United States have gone through a rigorous certification training process, which includes in-person training, a written exam, and references from clients.

Postpartum doulas are sometimes also full-spectrum doulas, which means they provide care during labor and delivery in addition to the postpartum period.

What does a postpartum doula do?

A postpartum doula visits after the baby is born to support the new family. Their tasks might include infant care, postpartum recovery support, and household management. Typically, they will check in on both the new parents and the newborn baby, and be there to support bonding, rest, and recovery. A postpartum doula can be hired for help with baby during the day or overnight. Visits might include:

  • Infant care: Sleep peacefully or spend time with older children while an expert takes care of the newest family member
  • Newborn education: Learn infant feeding and burping techniques, cord care, and how to start a sleep schedule
  • Household help: Get help with baby laundry, bottle preparation, pump part washing, nursery organization, and light meal prep.
  • Postpartum recovery: Benefit from expert tips on postpartum pain management, lactation support, and mental health after giving birth

At a postpartum doula visit, you can expect practical, educational, and emotional support for the whole family.

How much does a postpartum doula cost?

Postpartum doula care generally starts at $35 per hour. Commercial insurance does not typically cover doula care, but their services may be HSA/FSA eligible. Rates vary based on the doula’s level of experience, and if there are any special household considerations such as twins or awake care requirements.

Parents choose to engage a postpartum doula for different lengths of time, which also affects the total cost of doula care. Popular packages include 2-3 shifts per week for 6-12 weeks. At Partum Health, flexible care options mean the freedom to choose a schedule that fits your budget - and parents will tell you that even one night of doula care a week can make a huge difference!

How do I find a postpartum doula?

Find the best local postpartum doulas through Partum Health. Our postpartum doulas undergo a rigorous screening and selection process, and are hand-selected for their educational background and professional qualifications.

When you reach out, you’ll first speak with a care coordinator who will review your options for support. Then, you’ll be matched with prospective doulas, and have the opportunity to interview them one-on-one to find the best fit for your family before making the decision to hire.
